Australians lost almost $18 million to text message scams in 2025. Many text scams pretend to be from a trusted business or organisation.

Coming into effect in Australia on the 1st July, 2026 are new laws governing the sending of SMS messages in Australia. The new legislation is aimed at better protecting people from scam messages sent to their mobile phones. Messages to mobiles get very high cut through with the recipient, and are a lot harder to check for legitimacy due to the way users interact with text messages. You can't, for example, hover over a link to see if it is going to take you somewhere you are not expecting. Also, you cannot easily view the headers to find out where the message really came from.
No Change for Enudge Users
Because of the way eNudge works, there's actually no change for eNudge users; that's because the legislation change does not apply to:
- Sending SMS messages from a regular Australian mobile number (whether your own number or a random number), or
- Sending SMS messages from a rented short code.
The above 2 options are the only options provided by Enudge. So, in short, nothing changes for you if you are sending SMS through eNudge.
eNudge has never supported sending from a name, rather than a number, because it is not possible to receive replies to a message sent from a named sender (i.e. from an alphanumeric value). To fully comply with the Australian Spam legislation eNudge has always included, in every SMS, instructions for unsubscribing — that's done by replying to an SMS with 'REM'. In other words, to support unsubscribe, SMS messages must be sent from a number, not a name.
Who does the Legislation Change Impact?
The legislation change requires businesses which send text messages from a brand name (e.g. 'ANZ Bank' or 'ATO'), rather than from a number, must have that name registered on the new SMS Sender ID Register.
Telecommunications providers will check against the register, and warn recipients if a message is not from the named sender.
After 1 July, branded SMS messages coming from an unregistered name will be marked as "unverified" on your mobile phone. So look out for these!
